Hi all,

Has anyone bred Cerastes vipera? I was reading "True Vipers: Natural history....." and it said this species is both oviparous and viviparous and that when laid, eggs hatch within a few hours. Seems odd, but maybe some here have first hand knowledge.

Well, it's that time of year again...........

I've increased my hatch rate again this year, though for some reason one little fellow decided to muck up my perfect record. Just one baby was dead in the egg this year, fully formed. I'm not sure what happened with this one, though it was an egg that was in the middle of the clutch. Pulling my stats from the 2008 thread, here are my breeding results to date;

2006 - 5% hatch rate from 19 eggs

2007 - 48% hatch rate from 23 eggs

Last year was my third breeding season with my Cerastes cerastes and I'm very pleased with the improving results. The two seasons prior have been trial and error for me as I have been unable to locate any detailed information regarding their captive propogation anywhere (though books do say they are regularly bred in captivity ???). Though my experimentation I finally feel that I am closer to having these creatures figured out.

So...now there are a little bit more eggs in my incubator from my Cerastes cerastes.

On my samarensis I´m still waiting...and there are 3 eggs of Basiliscus plumifrons from friends of mine.

On this 3rd clutch I could monitor/observe an interesting thing again. The female closed the entry of the box with moss. On this time she put all of the moss to the other site of the Box. 1 Week ago she put all of it with her head out of the box...very interesting! Maybe it was to cold or wet.
