There aren't many large collections in Brazil, and this is by far the largest lost we ever had of scientific material. The collection contained the largest geographic coverage, the largest number of type specimens, and the largest ...

The team predicts that unless drastic conservation measures take place, the species will be driven to extinction within the next 20 years.

New report finds millions of marine turtles killed by fisheries, not thousands

Humankind’s appetite for seafood has had a bigger impact on the world’s marine turtles than long thought. A new report by Conservation International (CI) in partnership with Duke University’s Project GloBAL (Global By-catch Assessment of Long-lived Species) finds that in the past eighteen years it is likely millions of marine turtles have been killed as bycatch by the world’s fisheries.

Scientists: 60 million USD needed to gauge the global threat to biodiversity

by ADMIN on APRIL 8, 2010

One of the greatest barriers to saving the world’s biodiversity is simply a lack of knowledge: to date less than 50,000 species have been surveyed by the IUCN Red List regarding their threat level, while the vast majority of the world’s species are left unanalyzed especially fungi, plants, fish, reptiles, and insects and other invertebrates. To address this problem, some of the world’s top ...

This weekend we found a very large female African Tiger Snake that had just been hit by a vehicle. She was alive when we got to her

but had died by morning. We discovered she was carrying eggs and decided to remove them.

We removed 18 eggs which appear to be in good condition and they are now incubating , It would be a fantastic story should we be able

to save the life of the 18 Juveniles.

We measured this specimen at 98cm.

Extracting the eggs.

18 eggs.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2009) — Ecologists in Australia have discovered that cane toads are far more susceptible to being killed and eaten by meat ants than native frogs. Their research – published in the British Ecological Society's journal Functional Ecology – reveals a chink in the cane toad's armour that could help control the spread of this alien invasive species in tropical Australia.

A THOUSAND CALLS OF THE WILD CAPTURED

A free, online archive of wildlife sounds recorded throughout the western United States

has been created at The University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library. The digital archive is

available to anyone interested in listening to the natural sounds of this diverse section of

the North American environment.

If you can find the elusive Gunnison Sage Grouse while hiking through isolated pockets of

remote southeastern Utah, you might be ...

Lying In Wait For Extinction

Unlike birds and mammals, which are highly visible and have little trouble attracting funds for their conservation, the majority of reptiles are largely secretive and rarely seen. This is especially true of snakes, which are not generally greatly loved. Their very nature may contribute to their decline, according to a published in Conservation Biology.

Scientists Robert Reed and Richard Shine say due to a lack of good data on the abundances and population trends of snakes, we may not realize ...

Ambushing Prey May Make Snakes Vulnerable

ScienceDaily (Apr. 2, 2002) — Some species die out after their habitat is disturbed while others continue to thrive -- the big question is why? New research shows that part of the answer for threatened Australian snakes is that they ambush their prey instead of hunting actively. This work may help conservationists identify at-risk snakes before it's too late.

Currently, "declines may be difficult to assess until they have progressed to the point where remedial actions are difficult ...

ScienceDaily (Mar. 24, 2009) — Conserving Australia's most endangered snake might mean lighting more bush fires, ecologists have proposed.

The last remaining populations of broad-headed snakes are being threatened by encroaching woodland that is destroying their habitat, a study by scientists from the University of Sydney and Stanford University (USA) has shown.

"Broad-headed snakes are only found living in small pockets within 200 km of Sydney, and those small communities are ...
