Hello all,

I'd like to share two photos of my adult V. a. montandoni pair. The measurement isn't done superproperly, so let's say both vipers are about 80cm long. What are Your experiences with length in V. ammodytes? In a familiar thread, our friend Tiberiu said that the montandoni usually grow up to 55-60cm. That was quite a new information for me and I ended up confused, again knowing nothing about the length of ammodytes subspecies, lol. :-D Anyone?

Best regards,

Maciej

Hello there,

I recently got a nice trio from a friend, take a look.

Unfortunately I'm not sure about the subspecies, and that is my question. Any guesses here? I'll add some better shots soon, if needed (well, I'll add them anyway ;-)).

The request is: Is anybody in possession of a key to Vipera ammodytes subspecies? I have a paper - "The Snakes of Europe by G. A. Boulenger", but I'd like to know if something aiming more on european vipers ever came into existence.

Thanks ...

Curious if anyone has had success with Vipera berus in captivity?

I've had success maintaining this species without brumation for several years, but yet to have success breeding. My pair are most fond of rat pups (with occasional calcium carbonate supplementation), and as sub-adults are fed every 7 to 14 days - I get consistent feeding by leaving overnight. Defecation is quite frequent... They are "docile" in that they show interest in my presence and are extremely resistant to strike ...

I picked up these raddei from the same frined I got the V. ammodytes from. These are cb'07's

Female V. raddei

Male V. raddei

The one below supposed to be a Male V. r. kurdistanica. If anyone can tell me if it is or isn't kurdistanica, and why, I'd appreciate it. It has a different head pattern than the first 2, but that's all that really jumps out at me, without doing scale counts.

A kid I know captured this beauty in Turkey, in a holiday town very close to Istanbul. My first advise was for him to let the animal go but it looks like he is determined to keep it so I am helping him out with some setup/feeding tips.

I have been monitoring a number of sites since the 1970's and always look forward to February or March each year. the date at which our native Vipera berus males emerge from the winter slumber varies with our strange UK climate. This year a very long (by UK standards) and cold winter across much of the UK will have a similar effect upon the emerging berus.

My records show my earliest male was February 11 and this year is the latest with the first onces on my sites being 1 March.

My exceptionally large female V a meridionalis dropped a huge clutch of babies in June this year. There were a large number born dead and three needed euthanising.

I ended up with 15 live healthy little snappy vipers.

All needed assisting for the first few feeds and this was hard work to start but eventually they started to take DF pinkie mice.

At 13 weeks all but three are eating on their own.

I have a video showing me assist feeding them which I'll put up soon.
