PostSubject: Vipera ammodytes (Picture)   Sat 5 Apr - 12:23

years back, i received one Vipera ammodytes from a friend of mine.

i was not sure about if she will be suitable for our high temperatures, also i dont wanted to hibernate the snake, coz of many time brown outs here in the philippines.
well, 4 years later now, the snake is doing still very well. i really love here . as she is a nice contrast to all our tropical animals.

as my friend was buying here from somebody without any idea about locality, can some of the Vipera experts here give me a clue where she can came from? is that even possible to guess the locality by the coloration of the snake?

Vipera ammodytes female, from unknown Locality

cheers
Mario

Hi Mario
Difficult to tell you anthing about the origin of this snake, but, due to the very black dorsal band and the well defined side blotches, it must be a male.
I think it's ammodytes ammodytes, from the northern part of its range, perhaps Austria or Slovenia.
If it's from Austria (or northern Slovenia) indeed, some people still would say it's ammodytes gregorwallneri, described by SOCHUREK as the "alpine horned adder", but the acceptance of this subspecies has faded away recently, right now some research work is done on this "subspecies" (and on "ruffoi" too).
Cheers
Peter
