I haven't posted any photos here in a while, so I thought I'd post a couple of quick ones I snapped while cleaning cages last night. The photos are nothing special, but they are simply an update of some of the animals here.


I love how the color seems to keep changing on this girl. One minute she looks blackish, the next she looks muddy brown, and the next she has red and orange highlights all over her. Check out the orange speckles under her eye. I didn't alter the color on that, so it's all natural.


Here's the '07 male from Jim Campbell that keeps looking better and better. I'm hoping he'll knock up the above female this spring, even though he failed to this past fall.


A ceratophora photo that isn't too bad. I hope she is gravid this year.

On the second one, the little critter looks really angry ... from all that I've heard those Atheris ARE very agile, does that reflect Your experiences?

Yay, someone who finally appreciates my special blackish girl! Thanks Andrew, most folks just see the red squam and don't mention the female that is actually way more rare in coloration.

Thanks Guenter, that first one is a very calm animal and she let me get very close with my macro lens. I of course use the camera to block her and stay safe, but that is almost uncropped at 100mm, so that tells you how close I was to her. The second animal is not so endearing and struck repeatedly at me so that I didn't even bother with the macro lens. I wanted to get a nice macro of its skin, but I would have ended up with a nasty bite for sure. They are very agile and strike repeatedly when riled, so they go back in their cage and I try with another snake when they get too pissy with me.

Arghhhhh!!!......I tried to refuse to look at Atheris pictures, as they make me want them more and more every time....But it is SO HARD to resist! Fantastic pictures, Derek.
