Lachesis is a great genus.

I'd like every species in my collection when I have one.......Lachesis, Bothrops, Bitis and Atheris.....

They are nice but this is the bigest viper on Earth and possibly the heaviest! Bushmaster has allmost 80% death rate if i know correct. Antivenom is rearly effective and with sideeffects. This is one snake that diserves respect. I saw that they are available here in Eu. I more like Death Adders, but good luck if you planing to get one.

Bostjian,

80% death rate is from old data. The survival rate with treatment using Costa Rican Polyvalent antivenom produced by Instituto Clodomiro Picado is very high, even for bites from Lachesis muta (Dean Ripa, pers. comm on bite by one of my loaned animals). Necrosis from bushmasters is not the same as other species (e.g. Bothrops asper) and ICP Polyvalent is extremely effect at counteracting the venom effects IF administered rather quickly (less than 15 minutes).

If you were bitten in the rainforest and far from medical attention, then that is a different situation.

Regards,

MH
