poor animals? those animals were dead (specimen in alcohol)... It was one of the biggest collection of herpetology in the world, with a lot of Types specimen. A big loss for the neotropical herpetology. |

| Effectively, you're right! It's sad for all the animals that died in the fire, but the Type-specimens are irreplaceable.

| The live specimens werre spiders used for antivenom production. The spider lab was in the same building. Fortunately the llive snake collections used for antivenom production etc. are kept in different buildings in the Butantan complex.
This is an absolute tragedy both for science, and especially for my many friends and colleagues at Butantan who have devoted their lives tto the study of that collection. Some species represented in that collection are probably not represented in any other, others may have gone extinct for all we know. A vast amount of irreplaceable material went up in smoke, and so did some people's life's work.
I spent many months working n that collection n the 1990s, but still cannot imagine what my friends there must be going through. Absolutely heartbreaking. |

Definally heartbreaking working years with heart and soul on a project or research and you see it fall apart over nigth. On the other hand we should draw a lesson out of it that collections like this need to have a back up.
