Here are a few photos of my latest red pig clutch from this year. It'll be the usual force-feeding pain again for the next few months, but I guess one shouldn't complain too much.

Cheers

Martti

Very nice! A good friend of mine in the US breeds these regularly and has good luck getting the babies started on red-backed salamanders. If you have access to small salamanders of some type, you may be able to avoid force feeding.

Hi Martti!
Beautiful species. I've bred it several times but got tired of the force feeding. If they are born at the right season for catching small frogs they will eat without no problems. After a while you can turn over to pinkies. Tried to scent pinkies with frogs without success. I think it is the combination of the smelling of frog and the jumping that triggers feeding.
Good luck with next years litter.

Cheers, Tommy. Haven't heard from you for years.

Mine had three clutches and all the offspring fed alright with time and force-feeding. As yours, they had no response to frog*-scented pinkies or dead frogs, but scenting with Zootoca* had a marginal effect. The breeding pair has now been sold to Sweden, so look out for the babies next year (or this year, depending when you read this).

Cheers

Martti

Hello Martti,

I bred the red pigmy rattlers several times and had the same feeding-problem. I could solve it in many specimens by making them bite a pinky (often hard to make them bite at all), then opening the pinky´s head and leaving the mouse close to the snake. Most of those that I could make bite ate the pinky and soon started to hunt and eat by themselves.

Good luck,
Rainer

They do stay red. Here are the parents which I sold a couple of months ago. The new owner also reads the forum:
