PostSubject: Trimeresurus and Cryptelytrops   Tue 24 Aug - 23:15

Hi I was wandering what is the difference between Cryptelytrops and Trimeresurus? I've seen snakes that are in Cryptelytrops and Trimeresurus at the same time.

Hi Martin,
the txonomy has changed in 2004. MALHOTRA & THORPE (2004) presented a work in that the revised the txonomy of the genera Trimeresurus and Ovophis.
The revalid the genera Cryptelytrops, Pareas and Peltopelor and bring the new generaīs:
Garthius, Himalayophis, Popeia and Viridovipera.
So, some sientists donīt acceped this work and some hobbyist keepers donīt acceped or ignor this work!
Thatīs the reason, that you can find now, after this work sometimes the confusing names .

Trimeresurus albolabris or Cryptelytrops albolabris and so on....
Itīs the same snake, but the txonomy name has changed!

The name of this work is:

MALHOTRA A. & R.S. THORPE (2004): A phylogeny of four mitochondrial gene regions suggest a revised taxonomy for Asian Pitvipers (Trimeresurus and Ovophis) - Mol. Phyl. Evol., San Diego, 32 (1): 83-100.
