This is the setup I have prepared for my 1.2. Cryptelytrops albolab. Since they are still babies, I still have time to see how well the plants adapt and let them grow.

Hi guys! Thanks for all the comments.

Daniel, here is the list of plants I have used. The names are the ones under which I bought them so I can't guarantee for them:

Jessica, I used sphagnum pots I found at a local store for the plants. I included them in the styrofoam background like this:

Thanks Gustav.
Look a few posts up and you will see that I have used pots included in the styrofoam background for the plants. Inside them I put all-purpose eco-earth and then the plants, so they don't exactly grow out of the wall, although they seem that way. I spray them daily or twice a day for now until they adapt to the new environment.

I'm interested in what kind of light you use. My previous experiences is that well planted vivariums need a great amount of light to really do well.

I have used something that here in Sweden is called "Quicksilver lamps" they put out a great amount of light but not so much heat.

Daniel

Hi Daniel. I actually don't use anything fancy - plain fluorescent tube T5/8W Sylvania.
All these plants adapt well to both sunny and shady areas, as long as the level of humidity is ok. I have Ficus and Serenoa in another viv and they are thriving. The ferns actually prefer shady areas so it shouldn't be a problem for it. The babies tears also thrives in both shady and open, sunny areas. Selaginella is a close relative to the ferns and has similar preferences - high humidity, shady areas, that is why it was plated on the ground. At the moment everything seems well, time will tell.

Yes, that is correct. It was the main problem when I selected the plants. Generally, ferns and most tropical plants are tolerant to low light and other plants are highly adaptable. That should be a key point when selecting plants if you don't want very complicated lighting setups.

Yes of course i had a "brainfart".

Do you have a suggestion on a plant that will do well in a dry habitat terrarium, like small bush or something. I need to redo some of my Eurasian vipers cages with some low growing hardy plant. I saw a nice plant when i visited Milos, it grow all over the island. I asked the people on Milos and they told me but i can't remember what they said what it was.

Regards
Daniel

PostSubject: Re: New vivarium for Cryptelytrops albolabris   Mon 20 Sep - 17:32

I am guessing you would want some indigenous plants to recreate, as much as possible, the animal's wild habitat and I understand we are talking about warm-climate, mediterranean and dry climate Eurasian vipers. The problem I see is that you will need very good lighting as the plants we are talking about are adapted to full direct sunlight daily.
If that is not a problem, I would suggest using some of these shrubs, which should be easily available: Crataegus monogyna, Crataegus pentagyna, Prunus spinosa, Rhamnus lycioides, Rosa canina, Ligustrum vulgare, Cornus mas, Cotinus coggygria. Also, you can take a look at the trees in these areas, but which also take shrub-like form or can me molded to remain shrubs. The best species in this sense, and which are present in natural habitats are Carpinus orientalis, Fagus orientalis and Fraxinus excelsior.
As for the covering vegetation, different species of Agrostis, Poa, Stipa, Carex are recommended, as these plants make up most of the grasslands in mediterranean habitats.

Regards,
Tibi

This is what a typical sub-mediterranean habitat looks like here in N Dobrodja, to give you some inspiration:
