PostSubject: Central Asian Cobras (Naja oxiana) Breeding   Tue 22 Feb - 21:45

I have been putting my Naja oxiana together, on and off, for a few weeks, but have seen no action. They bred only one year, 2008, and I saw them breed on 3/15, and 3/21 of that year, but the female laid eggs on 5/2/08, so I know they must have bred before the 2 times I saw them. It was getting to be that time, and they both went into shed, and were not acting good together, so I kept them apart, and as soon as they finished shedding, I put them together, and this morning I caught them breeding for the first time since 2008.

In 2008, the female laid 8 eggs, but only 4 were good, and I kept them all. Luckily it was 2.2. The original female is a little bigger now, so hopefully she will lay at least 8 good eggs this year, if not more. Many people have asked me if the oxiana have bred, well now they have.

Thanks Stefan,

I'm stoked. That is 10 breedings with 5 different species of Asian Cobras this year. I may have a couple more breedings of kaouthia and maybe N. haje, but I did not see those breed, so I can not say for sure about them.

Yes, it is my best year so far. Now if all the breedings that took place will produce viable eggs, all will be good.

PostSubject: Re: Central Asian Cobras (Naja oxiana) Breeding   Wed 23 Feb - 6:33

Thanks guys.

Michael: I think good record keeping, so I know when certain species or certain specimens normally breed, has the most to do with successful breeding, The only problem is in the beginning, finding out when each specimen is ready to breed. On my website, on the "Breeding/Incubation" page, I list the start and end dates of each specie of Asian Cobra I have bred, so anyone can get an idea of when their specimens of the same specie might breed. Though that would only apply if they are in the Northern Hemisphere, I would think.

Jorg: I wish I had a banded siamensis male. I have 4 high-white males but none of them are banded. I have 2 nice banded females that are close to 50/50 black and white, and one of those bred this year, as well as the mostly black banded female that produced her, so maybe out of possibly 2 clutches, I will get a banded male or two. Really nice banded specimens seem to be harder to come by.

Hello Randy,

breeding the Najas is so much fun, as you see very early the result. (Mainly i breed reticulated pythons and you have to wait for about three months.)
Good luck for the oxianas, this is one of the rarest species of najas.

Another thing I would ask you for is your nice couple of het. sunset, het . suphan kaouthias is saw on another thread.
Did you breed these couple and produced your sunsets?
And did you bred your couple or did you get it otherwise?
Because I am asking is, that I have almost simular looking animals to yours from not known origin.
I hope to breed them this year so figure out some genetic.

Patrick: Thanks, Unlike Corn snake morphs, you pretty much know what your getting unless you breed kaouthias, (Suphan x Albino or Normal hets, or Sunset, "Leucistic", and Blizzard), but it is still as exciting to me.

I am very excited about the oxiana, even though I produced some in 2008. Since they didn't breed in 2009, and 2010, it ia almost like the first time again.

The pair of Possible Double Het Sunset/"Leucistic" kaouthia produced 26 eggs on Jan 30. One egg went bad, but the other 25 are doing great and getting much bigger. Not sure if I will get anything other than the same look as the parents.

I didn't see the pair of Suphans or the male Suphan and Normal female kaouthia breed, so I don't know if I will get eggs from them yet.

I also have a Sunset male, Het Sunset female, Banded Sunset male, Super Sunset female, all 2009's, and a 2010 Lavender Sunset male. I will give the 2009's at least another year, before breeding them. They are over 2 years old now.

Chaim: Thank you, yes though they are not the most beautiful Naja, they more than make up for it with personality/attitude. Definitely one of my favorites.

Sorry, I do not have locality info on them. They were CB here in USA in 2002. At least the male hatched out in 2002. I am not sure about the female. She could be slightly older or younger, and may not be related to the male.

Don't feel bad Joe, I want some of them all too, and I am going to have to expand my snake rooms. We can work something out with trades and/or skin work.
