They where hatched September 2010, so a little over a year old now. The female is the first picture the male is the second photo.
As for their temperament, they are absolutely insane. Once out and in hand they are fine but in the cage they are the most defensive snake I have ever worked with. Great fun though, I like snakes with a good amount of attitude.

| That first hortulanus is crazy!! Stunning red colour in that one..!
I've had a Drymarchon melanurus too and it was the most defensive snake I've ever worked with. Smashing agains the windows with full force every time I walked by. I've had to put a towel in front of the glass to protect it from itself, and once out of the cage it was even more psycho... Almost 2 meters of pure evil.

The 'J&W' Thread was certainly popular and educational( all 35 thousand views plus- the several hundred comments, questions and secondary discussions that added to the excellent photographs, good quality information and links to publications and other web sites). | No need to apologize Jon.
As much as we enjoyed the Jumpy and Worthless of what must be almost 5 years ago I think like a lot of things in Herpetoculture in North America things like that are no longer important.
For those that aren’t in on the inside joke that is Jumpy and Worthless the phrase was coined by a fellow snake keeper in Toronto Canada. It came from I believe when he was producing Hydronastes gigas and one of those investment minded keepers said he was not interested in those because they were “jumpy and worthless”.
As a result a small group of keepers myself included refer to any snake that in the “reptile market” is deemed low value and has a less than calm demeanor as jumpy and worthless or J&W for short.

PS The Drymarchon are cage defensive, once I get them out they are all puppy dog tame.

I think that the 'Jumpy and Worthless' Thread resonated with so many people because of the author's unapologetic disdain for so much of the current generation of Pet Reptile Keepers fascination with man made genetic abnormality and their monetary 'value' within the Pet Reptile Keeping Community. Remember how many individuals remarked that they had never seen or heard of many of the snakes that were depicted in the 'J&W' Thread. For a time(at least on that site), the message appeared to be getting through- that the study of Reptiles(snakes in particular, in this case)is a worthwhile endeavour in and of itself and that reptiles/snakes have an inherent value that far exceeds any commercial or marketplace/monetary value. | Yes Jeremy, I still got a few thing you that could catch you interest. I kept 4 young V.niloticus and no longer have the parents, so breeding is not in a near futur. I play with a little something else to occupied my spare time, while those niles slowly grow...  Take care. |
