PostSubject: re rodent feeding Ophiophagus hannah   Fri 30 Dec - 21:32

having had a number of kings, i noticed that the amount of faecal matter in the cage from rodents was alot more, it made me think about the whole nature of rodent feeding kings and the long term effects, whether there digestion system was compromised over a longer period, i saw from another keeper he had read that male kings fed on rodents can go sterile, and i wondered if anyone had any info or thoughts on long term rodent feeding kings

I have a friend that has raised several kings and bred them a few times. He has switched all of his over to rodents with no ill effects. His main male that he uses for breeding, and that he has raised since he hatched the clutch that it came from, is around 8 or so years old and has been eating rodents since it was a hatchling. I have things like that a lot recently but I've seen kings that seemed to do very well on rodents for many years. He produced a clutch last year to which all hatched so I think it's safe to say that rodents do not make the males sterile. They are no doubt more suited to eating snakes but I don't think there is any long-term ill effects from feeding rodents.
