Hey everyone, name's Aaron, I live near Toronto Canada. I've kept non-venomous reptiles and snakes for about ten years, been around them all my life though. I'd like to take the next step and start the process of learning about hots. I am currently looking for a mentor and reading as much as I can from info on individual species to antivenon to handling.

I look forward to participating on the forum and learning as much as I possibly can from the knowledgeable people here.

From what I've learned so far I think that the best bet I have for a starter (after some training) would be a Copperhead.. sorry I'm terrible with the scientific names still. Agkistrodon might be close. Lol, but honestly I probably deserve a good slap for that spelling disaster.

My favs and dream collection would be a selection of the Atheris'...I think they're absolutely incredible animals. I'm fascinated by Mambas too, and would like to eventually work up to them but I realize there will be quite a few years experience to gain before tackling that. I'm sure the rewards are well worth the effort.

As of right now I am herp-less, I moved away a couple years ago and had to adopt out my collection, now that I have returned I'm in the process of purchasing a stunning cbb Amazon Tree Boa.

Welcome here Aaron,
when you succesful keep Amazon Tree Boas, than you can imagine, how hard it can be to keep one of the Members of the Atheris Group. The riske for the keeper is there Venom, but not all of them are aesy to keep alive. Same like in some non-venomous snakes too.
Good to read, that you collect first some infos before you run to get an hot! Best way in my opinion!

Have fun here!

Welcome here Aaron. This is a good place to get lots and lots of information and maybe even a mentor.

Agkistrodon contortrix ssp is indeed a good venomous species to start with. Allthough if Atheris ssp is what you really like, it might be better to start with an arboreal species, like Trimeresurus ssp. Also a good species to start with, but with more of the same habits as Atheris.

Much luck with reading and learning!!
