PostSubject: Wide-angle lens!??   Sat 21 Jan - 19:33

Hello all,

Fishing for advice on an upgrade to a decent wide-angle lens mainly for 'reptile-in-habitat shots', perhaps a zoom in the range of 20-50mm so that it can be used as a general walk-around lens as well. Or is a compromise not worth considering, should I go for a dedicated prime around 20mm and keep the kit lens as a walk-around? Using crop sensor, canon 40D...

I've been looking at Sigma, both for cost and because some lenses seem to hold their own against canon's. Does anyone have any experience of the sigma 17-50 2.8 and sigma 20 f1.8? What do you use??

There are so many wide-angle lenses out there, any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
John

Have a look at the Sigma 10-20mm F4,0-5,6 EX DC / HSM

You can get it for ~ 340 Euro...

Regards
Michael

I have the Sigma 12-24 and the Sigma 20/1.8
In the wide angle area You better don't try to go for a cheap solution. The 20/1.8 vignettes a lot, the 12-24 is rather slow with AF and the aperture is 3.5-5.6 which is not much.
In fact I do prefer quality fixed focal length wide angles to zooms. Whereas it may not be that big difference in the tele range, the fixed wide angles are usually better than zooms.

Just my opinion.
