PostSubject: Naja atra, some pictures   Mon 24 Mar - 23:26

Here some pictures of my breeding female of Naja atra, light colour phase from Taiwan.
The lady's 8 years old now and she just laid her third clutch today:

First clutches (2006/2007) contained 11 eggs, today I found 15.
Well done, girlie, thank you!
Greetings from Austria, where it's a old national custom to find cobra eggs around Easter! Very Happy
Peter

Congrats Peter. Nice clutch, and the caging looks beautiful. Another specie I have not had the pleasure of keeping. One of the few. I have some Monacleds from my buddy Mitch of Diamond Reptile Breeders, that are possible het for Sunset and Leucistic. My female looks just like the one in your pics. She has the same type hood marking and pretty much the same color. Someone told Mitch crossed N. atra with N. kaouthia, but Mitch told me the other day, they are not atra at all. Hope to breed them next season when the male is old enough.

Nice Peter I hope my eggs hatch that fast. My B&W's usually hatch in less days than the Sumatrans, but with my luck the Russians and Sumatrans will take 75 days.

And here they are, just done their postnatal shed.
Darker in coloration as adults, and with aberrant mask pattern, as the parents are.
One can see two color types: some of'em have bright spots, some do not and are uniform brown.

Believe it or not, the uniform brown specimens are males, the spotted ones females.
And yes, sexual dimorphism doesn't occur in the genus Naja, as far as I know.

Congratulations, real beauties.

Yes, they do, we know it already, the light spottings in females will stay, whereas males will never develop any spots.
Due to ground colour changes, they're might not be that clearly visible in adults, but they're still present.
See pictures at the beginning of this thread. (female)
Cheers
Peter

I'm still sorting out about 2000 shots, Peter.
Will come up with some postprocessed soon (hope so). A first view showed that there are a couple of acceptable shots among the 2000.

Thanks again for the possibility to do this. Also besides photographing it was a great experience ;-)

Especially Your "jumping contest" with our big Naja haje male? Very Happy

Cannot wait for some of Your excellent shots, I'm pretty satisfied with some of mine, but Your's belong to another league, somehow.

Cheers
Peter

Jumping out of a lying position, not easy for a man in my age :-D

Hope my shots will fulfill Your expectations ...
