Anyone else keeping Deinagkistrodon acutus on the forum? I keep 1.1 CB07 and they are growing really fast now and never miss a meal. Pictures of them can be found in the Photo section.

Cheers, Ronny

This is one of last snakes you want to get bitten from. Even big prey starts to bleed out of ears, eyes and so on immedietly. These guys have very heavy stuff to distribute. Not in vain the chinese people call this snake 100m snake. Laughing

At the pic you see not a Transall Airplane, you see a 16 year old chinese guy of D. acutus eating a guinea pig.

But for me, they are somehow the "Bothrops of Asia" they look very slow and plump like some big Bitis, but they can be fast as hell!

These are quite beautiful snakes. Several months ago I got myself two babies.
They sure can be fast. Mine were a bit finicky feeders, but during spring both started to hammer down meals with great appetite.

Jörg, yours looks like a monster. Have you kept it since it was a baby?

Hi Markus. Your acutus look fantastic. Have you bred them?
They seem brighter than mine and what I've usually seen in pictures. The one on the 3rd photo looks like hypomelanistic or something. Awesome.

Hi Christian

No, I have got them 1 Week ago from another Austrian, he exchanged it against some ammodytes I think. So don't actually know who bred them, but I can ask for it.

You have to see them in real sunlight, just awesome, the soft pattern and the yellow they have.

I don't know if the female is hypomelanistic, but she is a lot brighter than the male.

Mine are really hardcore feeders, got them home and thought " they look a bit hungry" and i never saw a snake strike and eat that fast Smile

@markus

Very beautiful acutus!!!! you can be happy with them!

Is this the acutus pair, clemens was selling in braunau?? I had a look on them! the female is a real beauty!

Take good care of yorself! in this size my pair ( pics are in another topic) never tried to bite but when they reached 50/60cm they turned into killing machines!
I hope its only a phase in growing and they became a little more relaxed whith age!

my female is also brighter then the male! the male is darker with a lot more black!
I will post some new pics this weekend!

Best regards from Tyrol!
Benny

Thanks a lot for the additional information Markus. I hope to see more pics of your acutus as they grow. Would be especially interesting to see how that female turns out.

For awhile it seemed that my specimens calmed down after settling in, but recently they have been quite easily agitated. They have impressive speed and range indeed Smile

Can't wait to see additional pics of your acutus as well Benjamin.
The light colors are beautiful, but I'm equally stunned by the heavily black adults, such as the one on Jörg's photo.

Hi

Tanks for all your posts Smile

@Benjamin: yes those are the acutus from Clemens, I couldn't resist
Are you the guy with the extreme long black hair? Very Happy

At the moment they just strike to everything that moves (what moves has to be a prey for them) and they really don't like the hook.

What a pretty head! Can't get enough of them!

I hope you don't mind I ask sometnihg in this thread... These snakes are known that they need a bit cooler ambient temperatures ... What are the highest temperatures they tolerate, without harming their health? Any experiences?

Cheers!

PostSubject: Re: Deinagkistrodon...   Mon 15 Jun - 4:56

Hi Anze

I heard something that above 28 C° they don't like it anymore, but I have no experience so far with that.

And it depends on the region where they come from if they do a complete winter break or not.
But it should be about 5 C° or lower

Please correct me if I had false informations

PostSubject: Re: Deinagkistrodon...   Mon 15 Jun - 23:24

Hi Markus
They are beautiful snakes! I have bred them 3 years in a row and this season I give the female a rest! I have 2 other females, but the male only likes the larger female!
The eggs have very thin skin and you can see the veins quite clearly. They hatch between 23 and 28 days at 27 degrees Celcius. I do not cool mine much. They are in cages close to the floor and the temperature gets to about 30 degrees in summer and drops to about 20 when it is really cold in winter. The babies can be problems! Most will take frogs but mice no!
They do not like pinkies but a couple will start off on small fuzzies if you are lucky!, I start off force feeding and after a few feeds most will start taking on their own. I must take some photos of mine and some of the baby males I kept back as I was short on males.
Cheers
Gavin

Thank you for your answers! Trutnau (2004) says that the temperatures should be lowend to 15°C any experiences with that?

Cheers,
Anze

Hi ANze,

What I know: exemplares living in regions which are not getting colder then 9C° in Winter, they stay active, in colder regions they do a winter break from December to March, and they use dry "rodent buildings" (soory, it's too early to translate this better Laughing )

So it depends on de region....bit I think if you have CB ones, 15 C° will do it.

greetings

PostSubject: Re: Deinagkistrodon...   Tue 16 Jun - 16:22

The temperatures depends ond the regions so if you don´t know the regions same as me they recommended to me hold these temperatures. I have day temperature in the cage between 22 and 26C and the night is about 20-22C. They can hibernate in temperature about 12-16C it can be lower (I heard about 8-12C) but I´m not sure if I can do it.

I know the temperatures are depending on a region of origin, but I hoped for an answer you gave me Smile Thanx again. Cool
